API 602 forged steel gate valve is a valve where the closure member (the gate) moves perpendicular to the centerline of the flow path. The closure element is a gate, and its direction of movement is perpendicular to the fluid flow direction. Forged steel gate valves are designed solely for fully open or fully closed operation; they are not suitable for flow regulation or throttling.
When the valve is in the closed position, the gate and seat form a sealed space, blocking the flow of media. When the valve is open, the space between the gate and seat is unobstructed, allowing media to flow freely.
Opening and closing the valve is achieved by rotating the stem. Rotation of the stem drives the gate upward or downward, thereby controlling the flow of media.

Low fluid resistance. The sealing surfaces are subjected to less erosion from the working media when fully open compared to globe valves.
Lower operating force required. The flow direction of the medium is unrestricted.
Relatively simple structure. They offer good castability.
High pressure resistance. Capable of withstanding high-pressure operating conditions, ensuring stable performance under high temperatures and pressures.
Corrosion resistance. The forged steel material provides excellent corrosion resistance, making it suitable for various media, including highly corrosive liquids and gases.
Large overall dimensions and opening height. They require significant installation space.
Friction between sealing surfaces during operation. This relative sliding motion can easily cause abrasion, results in high operating torque, and can lead to scratches on both the gate and seat sealing surfaces, potentially causing valve leakage.
Dual sealing surfaces. Forged steel gate valves typically feature two sealing surfaces (gate faces and seat faces), which increases the difficulty of machining, lapping, and maintenance.
